ACT TWO
About fifteen minutes later. The space is empty. COCO and MOLLY, both early twenties, enter. Theyâre an art-pop duo dressed in their civilian clothes, carrying bags with them. They look very much like they could be Faye and Mel, around fifteen years ago.
MOLLY. You sure?
COCO. Itâs fine. (Calling out.) Hello? (Back to MOLLY.) See, itâs fine.
MOLLY. But are we allowed to be in here?
COCO. Weâre allowed to be anywhere.
MOLLY. But genuinely? As in youâve actually cleared it with someone?
COCO. No oneâs around, are they?
MOLLY. Whatâs that smell?
COCO. Donât be rude.
MOLLY (looking around). Whatâs going on with all this?
COCO. Leave things alone. Itâs fine. Weâre out of the way.
MOLLY. So weâre not allowed in here?
COCO. I just mean no oneâs going to disturb us. I heard voices from the big building across the yard.
MOLLY. Right.
COCO. But Iâll keep a lookout.
MOLLY. Is it weird that I want to do some filing?
COCO. Yes.
MOLLY (picking through some papers). Look at the state though. Who can work like this?
COCO. Stop it! Just stop it and pay attention to me.
MOLLY. Okay! (Spotting something.) Ooh, nice lamp.
COCO. Youâre ridiculous.
MOLLY. Am I?
COCO. Now get your clothes off, we havenât got all day.
MOLLY. Wow.
COCO. I mean it.
MOLLY. What is it that they make here?
COCO. Scissors.
MOLLY. Really?
COCO. Yeah. Theyâre like really famous scissors.
MOLLY. I was just imagining something a bit more glamorous â from how youâd described it.
COCO. Well thatâs our job.
MOLLY. What is?
COCO. To bring the glamour. (Beat.) We didnât have to come. I thought you were into it.
MOLLY. No, I am.
COCO. Yeah?
MOLLY. Course.
COCO. So youâre not pissed off at me?
MOLLY. Why would I be pissed off?
COCO. I donât know, thatâs why Iâm asking.
MOLLY. Iâm not.
COCO. Okay, good. (Beat.) Look, I know itâs not⦠Iâm not saying itâs ideal, but any time you want to find us something better â
MOLLY. I wasnât complaining.
COCO. Okay.
MOLLY. Itâs good. Itâs great. Itâsâ¦
MOLLY opens the walk-in cupboard door. She screams.
Jesus shitting Christ!
COCO. What?
FAYE emerges from the cupboard. Sheâs been crying.
FAYE. Sorry â Iâm sorry.
COCO. What the fuck?
FAYE. Iâm really sorry.
MOLLY. Whatâs going on?
COCO. Mace her! Mace her in the face.
FAYE. Please donât.
MOLLY. Who are you?
FAYE. Iâm sorry. I wasnât expecting⦠I thought if I was quiet you might just leave, but â
COCO. Who are you though?
FAYE. Iâm Faye. Iâm not⦠Everythingâs okay.
COCO. No it isnât.
FAYE. It is. Itâs fine. Iâm fine. Do you, um, do you both work here too?
MOLLY. What?
FAYE. Are you the other apprentices?
COCO. No.
FAYE. Who are you then?
MOLLY. Um â weâll ask the questions.
FAYE. I⦠Iâm the owner, actually.
COCO. Really?
FAYE. Yes. Why wouldnât I be? Iâm a very good owner, as it happens. Iâm a natural. Itâs in my blood. Not my actual blood, but⦠This is all mine, anyway.
COCO. So youâre Susie?
FAYE. Excuse me?
COCO. Youâre Susie Spenser?
FAYE. No.
COCO. Because thatâs who weâre meant to be meeting.
FAYE. Really?
COCO. Thatâs what it says in my email. Hang on, Iâll check.
FAYE. Why are youâ¦? Susie doesnât own anything.
MOLLY. Why were you hiding in the cupboard?
FAYE. Itâs been a long day.
MOLLY. It just doesnât seem like something someone in a position of power or authority would do.
